There are a lot of great things about cell phones  – they keep us connected to loved ones and make it easier to get from here to there. But we also know there are some downsides to cell phones in Denver, and interrupting the quality of your sleep is one big one. Keep reading to find out more about how all that scrolling may be causing you to feel tired throughout the day.

Constant Scrolling Increases Anxiety

Recent research has shown that smartphone and tablet use increases rates of anxiety and depression – especially in teenagers. As it turns out, being constantly connected through messaging apps and social media is not quite as great as it seems. And both anxiety and depression lead to poorer sleep, which can in turn worsen both.

Blue Light Interferes with Deep Sleep

When it comes to the effects of smartphone and tablet usage, it’s not just if you use this technology, but also when. Peering into a screen in the hours right before bed makes it harder for you to fall into a deep sleep, which will leave you feeling groggy and fatigued during the day. That is because the blue light of your phone or tablet prevents your body from producing melatonin, the chemical necessary for restful sleep.

Unfortunately, as much as 90 percent of Americans report using an electronic device in the hour before bedtime, which means this problem is likely worsening.

Other Reasons for Poor Sleep

People who already have issues with their nightly rest experience greater problems from cell phone usage as they relate to sleep. One common disorder is sleep apnea, which causes sufferers to stop breathing due to a blockage in the airway. People with this condition also frequently snore, which not only affects their sleep but can also interfere with their partner’s ability to fall into a deep rest as well.

If you are experiencing any of the warning signs that you are missing out on quality sleep every night, do not hesitate to get in touch with a trained doctor or sleep dentist. You won’t regret taking steps to get the rest you need!
